The musical South Pacific, with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, premiered on Broadway in 1949. Set during World War II, it tells the story of a romance between an American nurse and a French plantation owner on a South Pacific island, and addresses themes of interracial relationships, prejudice, and war. The show features classic songs such as "Some Enchanted Evening," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair," and "Bali Ha'i." South Pacific won numerous Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and its original cast album won a Grammy Award. It has since been adapted into a film and multiple revivals have been staged on Broadway and in London's West End.
